The partnership with the Amana Reserve
Last month, we informed you about the arrival of new dogs as part of our partnership with the Amana Reserve and spoke to you about the importance of welcoming these dogs.
We wanted to talk about this exceptional partnership and tell you a bit more about it. In French Guiana, several species of sea turtles live and nest each year on the beaches. However, the turtles and their reproduction are threatened by multiple factors and predators, including dogs.
Every year, local associations report a sad toll linked to stray or roaming dogs, which cause suffering to the turtles: direct attacks, dug-up nests, or eaten eggs. Out of ignorance or negligence, dogs unintentionally become a threat to a protected species.
For a long time, the only response was the euthanasia of stray dogs near the nesting areas. Faced with this urgency, our sanctuary Doggy Oasis International decided to act and, in partnership with the Amana Nature Reserve, to welcome stray dogs captured on the beaches. Often thin, parasitized, and fearful, these dogs have known neither care nor a home and also deserve to be protected and loved.
Since March, we have welcomed about fifteen dogs to the refuge under this program, and some have already been adopted after a period of observation, training, and care.
